In his prime,
Great Defender was one
of the speediest horses on the Ontario circuit,
accounting for the 1999 Kennedy Road Stakes and
even competing in the prestigious Queen’s
Plate. When ankle problems forced his retirement
after 5 seasons of racing, he was donated to
LongRun and has been generously sponsored at no
cost to LongRun by trainer John Leblanc and his
wife Maggie. When neighbour Franz Crean and his
wife Danielle were looking for a babysitter for
their weanling colt, the Leblancs offered to
lend this handsome and gentle grey gelding to
them for the summer. He’s pictured here tending
to their weanling chestnut colt by
A Fleets Dancer out of
Bell’s Gold, and is best pals with mom as well.
